Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) Services

Communicate when you need to, where you need to.

Communicating clearly with the Deaf or hard of hearing community or persons with limited English proficiency requires skilled interpreters. Certain scenarios (like short interactions), however, don’t always warrant an on-site interpreter. When that’s the case, LUNA can provide video remote interpreting services (VRI) to bridge communication gaps in more than 20 spoken languages and American Sign Language (ASL). All of these languages are available 24 hours a day.

Video remote interpreting is ideal for clients needing immediate access to an interpreter while waiting for an on-site interpreter to arrive (for example, when treating emergency room patients). It is also an excellent cost-savings alternative for clients in rural areas that would normally have to pay for interpreter travel time and mileage.

Our experienced and highly qualified (both state and nationally certified) team of interpreters is available on-demand, 24/7.

What We Offer

Video remote interpreting is a video-telecommunication service that provides language access by using an off-site interpreter who teleconferences into the client’s environment. Those requiring VRI services will need to be equipped with a webcam, videophone, or another type of device that has both video and audio capabilities. Strong internet connectivity is also required.

We can easily schedule VRI appointments around the clock in select languages and can provide this service to clients anywhere in the world.

Is VRI Appropriate For Your Needs?

For best practices, it is important to assess whether or not using video remote interpreting is an appropriate replacement for an on-site interpreter. In accordance with recommendations of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, LUNA will advocate for on-site interpreters for appointments where the physical presence of an interpreter is required.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding whether VRI is an appropriate choice:

  • Number and roles of participants
  • Visual and/or acoustic barriers
  • Physical placement of participants
  • Length of time an interpreter is needed
  • Role and function of the interpreter
  • Sensitivity of information involved
  • Mobility of video/audio device
  • Cost effectiveness
