Challenges

ODAR had a need for certified American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken language interpreters in 25 cities across the state of Indiana. The interpreters would cover medical appointments, behavioral and physical assessments, ongoing therapies, and court appearances connected to the determination of Social Security benefits for the consumer or his or her spouse. In addition, the interpreters would serve as a cultural bridge between ODAR and consumers facing a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional challenges.

ODAR “is responsible for holding hearings and issuing decisions as part of the Social Security Administration’s process for determining whether or not a person may receive benefits [and is] one of the largest administrative adjudication systems in the world.”

To meet these needs, ODAR selected LUNA Language Services as its primary language services provider.

LUNA’s Solution

We designated a single coordinator to manage all ODAR communications and created a customized system that made possible the rapid confirmation of all assignments. To fulfill ODAR’s statewide needs, we recruited over 100 interpreters throughout the region in 25 languages, including ASL, Burmese dialects, and rare languages.

Results

Today, we coordinate over 100 ODAR appointments a month, confirming each with an interpreter within two hours of receipt. By recruiting local interpreters, we have also significantly cut the travel costs that ODAR used to pay to interpreters travelling long distances to appointments. ODAR has also remained extremely satisfied with the quality of services our contract interpreters are able to provide.
