After several years of substantial growth, LUNA Language Services, Indianapolis-based interpreting and translating company, has expanded its staff and moved its office to Waterplace Towers at 8935 N. Meridian St., Suite 250 Indianapolis, IN 46260. LUNA President and Owner, Chris Waters, said, “We intentionally selected the North corridor as our home base and decided to design a space with a contemporary feel in hopes of attracting other startups and growing businesses to this part of the city.”
LUNA was started as Indianapolis Interpreters in 2001 by Waters, a native Hoosier, after returning from his service in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. The company at the time was a one-man operation run out of a studio office on Massachusetts Avenue. Since then it has outgrown three spaces: Mass Ave., Broad Ripple and the Northside of the city. The growth and success of Waters’ company has tracked the influx of refugees and immigrants moving to Central Indiana. The company rebranded in 2014 as LUNA Language Services, and now proudly employs 30 employees and contracts with hundreds of freelance interpreters across the state to provide language services in close to 100 languages.
In 2014, LUNA won a contract with the state of Indiana to serve as the single coordinating unit for the state’s American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting needs. LUNA became primary vendor for all language interpreting requests in the Marion Superior Court system in 2015. LUNA also is the primary vendor at IU Health and services all major hospitals as a primary contractor or sub-contractor. LUNA nearly tripled its office space to better serve its full-time staff and large number of contract interpreters.
The office is filled with open spaces, bright colors and many cultural influences mimicking LUNA’s diverse staff. Promoting and welcoming diversity is a key component of LUNA’s business model and was an important idea in the design of the new office. Marina Hadjioannou Waters, LUNA Chief Operating Officer, said “Our staff speaks twelve different languages and represents 16 distinct cultures from literally all across the globe. We are proud and committed to maintaining one of the most diverse and multicultural workforces in the city.”
The office is intentionally designed to be a welcoming, non-intimidating space. Naw Phaw, Director of Language Services, explains, “We wanted our new home to be a welcoming environment to everyone, not an intimidating space, but a place that our employees and contract interpreters, many recently resettled refugees, would be comfortable to visit, and a place that would bring joy to our visitors and staff.”
The office includes a training facility, LUNAcademy where staff, interpreters and clients receive professional development, a meditation/quiet space, a colorful lounge, modular spaces, a juicer and a steady flow of healthy snacks. “Our staff’s physical and mental health come first,“ says Waters. “Design a space that encourages a healthy lifestyle and employees will be more productive and fulfilled.”
