As a qualified Spanish-English medical interpreter and valued interpreter at LUNA Language Services, Lilia Mena Guerrero is well versed in medical terminology, ethics, confidentiality and interpreter professionalism. Lilia became a medical interpreter in 2008 to help finance her education and gain knowledge and confidence in a medical environment. She completed Bridging the Gap, a forty-hour medical interpreter training LUNA offers its contract interpreters.
Lilia and her family immigrated to America when she was seventeen. Shortly after arriving, Lilia’s sister became very ill. While in the hospital, Lilia and her family could not understand what the doctors and nurses were saying about her sister’s condition. It was a very uncomfortable and frightening situation as they did not understand English very well.
After experiencing this language barrier, Lilia set a goal to master English and to pursue a healthcare career. She went on to attend college, obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and ultimately passed the state of Indiana examination as a registered nurse in 2014.
As a contract interpreter with LUNA, Lilia has assisted individuals during all types of hospital scenarios, in every major hospital in Indianapolis. From registration, to the emergency room, to surgery and cancer treatments, Lilia has interpreted for families in need and has been a bridge of communication and cultural understanding for the patient care team.
We are so excited and want to congratulate Lilia on accepting a position as a full-time labor and delivery nurse in the Community Hospital Network!
We are so proud of Lilia and all she has accomplished. Her story exemplifies how an interpreting career can be part of a wonderful professional pathway for individuals with bilingual skills! It’s been an honor to be part of her inspiring journey.
