LUNA Language Services was delighted to provide an important training to first responders in the Central Indiana Area about communication strategies with Deaf community members and how to work with ASL interpreters! Rebecca Buchan, Director of ASL Services for LUNA Language Services led a half-day training session with police, fire, and emergency responders in the Central Indiana area.

This included participants from Cumberland Police Department, the Indianapolis Airport Authority, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Indiana State Fire Marshall, Pike Township Fire Department, Eskenazi Health Behavioral Health, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Carmel Police Department, Fishers Fire Department, and Warren Township Police Department. This class was held at the IMPD Law Enforcement Training Academy and was initiated and organized by the Cumberland Police Department.

We thank all of the men and women who attended and actively participated in better understanding how to communicate with Deaf community members and promote more safety in our community. We certainly appreciate the enthusiasm of the Cumberland Police Department to lead this initiative and organize this class! We look forward to offering this training again in the future.
