Understanding and Implementing Language Access in Nonprofit Work

As nonprofits work hard to fulfill their mission in serving the community, we believe it’s important for all public-serving organizations to be intentional about reaching all communities with their messaging and services, and mindful about overcoming communication barriers. Bridging language and cultural backgrounds can open up any nonprofit organization to support more community clients and can ensure your outstanding work will reach your local global community members.

Join us on Thursday, July 16th for a lunchtime discussion with communications professionals in several Indiana nonprofits who have come to understand the importance of language access in their work and who have personal experience with sourcing and implementing resources for language support.

💡Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the importance of language access and explore the sometimes unseen language demographics of our community.
  2. Uncover how and where to implement language access tactics and what sustainable resources may be available.
  3. Discuss the return on investment of making the effort to include our LEP (limited English proficient) communities in any nonprofit’s work.

Duchess Adjei, Regional Communication and Marketing Director, American Red Cross Indiana Region

Duchess Adjei, M.S.C., M.A., joined the American Red Cross in the spring of 2016. As the Regional Communication and Marketing Director, she leads all internal and external integrated communication, marketing, digital, media and public relations strategies for a four-state territory. Her transformational initiatives have led to shaping high profile campaigns and initiatives, which have helped to expand the reach of lifesaving Red Cross services. Adjei initiated extensive projects at the Red Cross, among them includes the consolidation for hundreds of social media platforms, growing digital presence and consistent messaging during disasters, leading crisis communication efforts on local emergencies, serving as a spokesperson and content creator on national disasters, while also building a robust engagement program for more than 4,000 volunteers.

Jackie Rodriguez, Marketing and Communications Manager, Immigrant Welcome Center

Jackie Rodriguez is the Marketing and Communications Manager at Immigrant Welcome Center (IWC), a non-profit immigrant serving organization that works to connect Indy’s immigrants with the resources they need most, while also collaborating with other local organizations and city leaders to make Indianapolis a more welcoming city for all. Jackie is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and has always had an interest in storytelling. Her goal is to use modern day communication tools and best practices to share the IWC’s impact while creating a space to uplift stories from our immigrant neighbors. She is currently finishing her bachelors degree in Marketing Management though WGU, and hopes to one day start her own communications consulting firm aimed at assisting local non-profits and small businesses.

Sara Hindi, Community Engagement Coordinator, Exodus Refugee Immigration

Sara Hindi is the Community Engagement Coordinator at Exodus Refugee Immigration, a local nonprofit dedicated to the protection of human rights by serving the resettlement needs of refugees and other displaced people fleeing persecution, injustice, and war by welcoming them to Indiana. Sara has served the refugee community in Indianapolis for 6 years with Exodus. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Media and Public Affairs and is fluent in Arabic.

Tiffany Hanson, Outreach and Engagement Manager, LUNA Language Services

Tiffany Hanson is an ultimate connector and avid community engagement enthusiast. Tiffany spends a majority of her day-time hours representing LUNA Language Services, engaged in opportunities to further language access initiatives for immigrants, refugees, and members of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities. Tiffany also works with Indy Pride as the Director of Marketing and Communications and volunteers with fabulous organizations like the Diversity Roundtable of Central Indiana, the IPS Education Foundation, and the Indiana Latino Expo.
