In this virtual lesson hosted through Zoom, LUNA court certified staff interpreters, Carolina Salter and Julio Gonzalez will walk you through the ins and outs of interpreting for criminal and civil court cases. The lesson includes discussion of: local customs and procedures, types of hearings, special considerations when working with specific judges, the layout of the City-County Building, court decorum, and interpreter ethics in the courtroom.
Upon completing this workshop, you will be able to:
– Identify the professionals in a court proceeding and describe their respective roles
– Interact professionally with all parties present in the courtroom
– Explain when to use the three modes of interpretation in court proceedings (simultaneous, consecutive, and sight)
– List common hearings that make up a criminal case
– Analyze common court interpreter dilemmas and justify the appropriate course of action
